Grade 3 Ohio Derby | June 22 | Thistledown | Race 13 | 6:30 PM E
Catching Freedom placed fourth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and third in the Grade 1 Preakness after winning the Grade 1 Louisiana Derby in March. He holds career earnings of $1,347,350 million, significantly higher than the rest of the field. This son of Constitution was bought for $575,000 in the 2022 September Keeneland yearling sale and will experience a notable drop in class competing in this Grade 3 race. Expect a strong performance in the final stretch, as the nine-furlong distance plays to his advantage. Catching Freedom triumphed in the Smarty Jones Stakes (listed) at Oaklawn by 2 ½ lengths and secured a 1-length victory in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. Despite swerving in the Preakness Stakes on a muddy track, he still performed well in both Triple Crown races. Trainer Brad Cox decided to skip the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes and bring the most accomplished horse to the Ohio Derby, taking into account both class and speed ratings. He has three victories in five starts on a fast track, and the weather forecast for the race appears to be dry. Additionally, Catching Freedom holds the fastest early, middle, and second-fastest late pace speed figures in the field. Jockey Luis Saez and trainer Brad Cox win 30% when teaming up. Any post-time odds at 4/5 or higher is a gift.
