Jeff's Top 5 MLB Left-Handed Starters age 27 or younger (2013 Season)

The elite left-handed starters have a big advantage just for the simple fact that most players see a lot more right-handed pitching. Also, batting practice is mostly thrown by righties. Look for teams that have not faced a Quality left-handed starter for some time ( five games or more) and you will have a nice winning investment. Here are my Top 5 left-handed starting pitchers age 27 or younger going forward for the 2013 season.

No. 1 Clayton Kershaw (LAD) Age: 24 (2012: 14-9, 2.53 ERA, 1.02 WHIP)

Led the NL in ERA last season. Will be 24 on March 19th. Clayton Kershaw was quoted as saying that "this is the best he has felt this early in Spring Training". The Dodgers opening day starter for the third straight season and is poised to have a monster season. Was No. 1 on this very list last year and No. 2 in 2011. Clayton has arrived and in a big way and you could argue that at his age he will only get better. Your 2011-12 MLB NL CY YOUNG award winner. He went 21-5 with a 2.28 ERA, 0.97 WHIP (crazy good), 248 K's in 233.1 IP. His career numbers are impressive as well. How about 61-37 with a 2.79 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 974 K's in 944 IP. He works very hard on his craft off the field which is why he is so so good on it. Kershaw has the added benefit of pitching in the NL West, as three of the stadiums are picther's havens most of the season. Clayton has a 95 MPH fastball, an A+ curve-ball, great Slider, and change up that gets better every season. A good hitter too, he had a career high 16 hits (.225) in 71 at-bats in 2011. Was a bit unlucky last year as he hit the ball hard, but right at defenders. Batted .207 (12-for-58) with 2 BB last season. Kershaw is the best left-handed starter in all of baseball at any age.

No. 2 David Price (TB) Age: 27 (2012: 20-5, 2.56 ERA, 1.10 WHIP)

Led the AL in ERA last season. Has pitched 200+ innings for three consecutive seasons. Your 2012 AL CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER. Was No. 4 on this very list last year and has emerged as a legitimate ACE of any staff. The Dodgers originally signed David Price out of high school but decided to attend Vanderbilt on an academic scholarship. The Rays are glad to have him now. Imagine what the Dodgers rotation would look like if Price had stayed! He has a cut fastball that flies in at 92-96 MPH. The pitch is almost unhittable along with his devastating slider and change-up. Batters have a very difficult time trying to pick up the ball. David struck-out 205 batters in 211 IP last season. Price is 61-31 with a 3.16 ERA in his career and is just getting warmed up. Don't forget that in 2010 he tied for second in the American League (Jon Lester) in Wins (19) and in third place in ERA (2.72). Price was ranked 8th in the league in strikeouts with 188, and in 2011 he had 218 K's in 224.1 IP. The fact that Price gets to pitch most of his games in AL Parks makes his stats even more impressive.

No. 3 Matt Moore (TB) Age: 23 (2012: 11-11, 3.81 ERA, 1.34 WHIP)

Matt went 5-6 with a 4.42 ERA and .252 batting average against before the ALL-STAR break last season. After the break, Moore was 6-5 with a 3.01 ERA and .220 opponent batting average. Should be a sign of things to come. Was ranked high on this list last season. I am sticking with him and his outstanding skill set. Matt Moore possess one of the most gifted arms in all of baseball, and should improve a great deal off his 2012 campaign. He made his MLB debut with an outstanding five-inning start against the Yankees and then started the first game of the playoffs for the Rays, completely dominating the Rangers in 2011. Everyone from inside the Rays organization to opposing scouts raves about his work ethic and overall makeup. He is poised for double digit wins and an ERA in the low 3's. Matt nit-picks his own abilities and finds the smallest things to work on and improve his game. He did just that this past Winter. His Fastball reaches 97 MPH and his Curve-ball is described as "sick" by scouts. Moore also throws a very good Circle Change. This pitch has sinking qualities with a Circle grip with good arm speed and deception. Moore had 175 K's in 177.1 IP which shows scouts he is ready to take that next step. Will need to cut down his Walks (81 in 2012) in half. With a solid makeup and gifted skills Matt Moore is a future left-handed stud for many years to come.

No. 4 Madison Bumgarner (SF) Age: 23 (2012: 16-11, 3.37 ERA, 1.14 WHIP)

Was on this list last year and he came through with his best season of his young career. Reminds me a lot of David Price in delivery and stature, although Madison is taller by 3 inches. He is just 36-30 with a 3.20 ERA in his career but has the "stuff" and desire to be a 20-game winner. He gets to pitch half his starts in pitcher's friendly ballpark. AT&T Park was the 3rd toughest park in the NL at allowing Home Runs, with San Diego and LA Dodgers being the first two. Madison Bumgarner had 191 K's in 204 IP in 2011 and 191 K's in 208.1 IP last season. His 8.3 strikeouts per 9 innings was 5th best among starters in the NL last season. The Giants had the lowest ERA in all of baseball for two straight seasons. At 6'5 and 225 he has the look and skill of a Top of the Rotation star.

No. 5 Gio Gonzalez (WASH) Age: 27 (2012: 21-8, 2.89 ERA, 1.12 WHIP)

Won 20 games last season for the first time in his 5-year career. Had 207 strike-outs in 199.1 IP. Very Good. Has increased his win total every season since his 2008 rookie season. Was third in the NL CY Young Award voting last season. Gio has put together three straight solid seasons, with last season reaching elite status. In 2010, Gio went 15-9 with a 3.23 ERA and 1.3 WHIP for Oakland. In 2011, Gio went 16-12 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.3 WHIP. How about his career numbers of 59-40, with a 3.65 ERA, and 1.33 WHIP. Has 718 K's in 734.2 IP in his career. Solid. Gonzalez throws four pitches and all of them are above average. A four-seam fastball at 92-95 MPH, a two-seam fastball at 91-95 MPH, a curveball at 78-82, and a change-up in the mid 80s that is used primarily against right-handed hitters. His Curveball was taught to him by his father and is regarded as one of the best Curveballs by any MLB active pitcher. The Nats should be really good once again this season and Gio should be right in the thick of it. I would expect 14-18 wins with an ERA around 3.

Wishing you a winning Baseball Season!
